With Heroin Deaths Rising Sharply, White House Announces New Initiative

With heroin deaths rising sharply in recent years, the White House has announced an initiative to combat the growing problem starting with 15 Northeast U.S. States.

According to the Washington Post, the program, which will be initially funded for one year, will target the source of the heroin and the method by which it reaches the streets. Shifting away from an emphasis on punishing the drug users, the new plan also focuses on teaching law enforcement officers to identify and treat heroin overdoses quickly.

GoLocalProv has teamed up with GraphIQ to provide the figure below which depicts the number of fatal heroin overdoses in the U.S. from 2002 to 2012.
