5 Live Music Musts: January 3, 2014

We're looking forward to a great year of music, starting this weekend. As always, there are some big names and hidden gems in the mix. Read on for our top 5 live music musts...

Weather permitting, tonight at The Spot, check out the Hip Hop/Reggae fusion sounds of The Alchemystics. The group features a distinctive sound along with stirring lyrics. The Custies, Elephant, and The Romano Project open the evening starting at 8:30. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day of show.

Also tonight, the Narrows Center has veteran singer-songwriter, Chris Smither . He’s a mainstay on the folk scene and recently released his 12th studio album, Hundred Dollar Valentine. He’s also heard on a new compilation CD, Live at Café Lena, in honor of America’s oldest continuously running folk music coffeehouse. Tickets are $25, show is at 8PM.

Ska fans will want to head to Dusk tonight for a “Ska Goes Solo” show. The event features Chris DeMakes of Less Than Jake, Jay Tea of The Arrogant Sons of Bitches, and Ryan Eldred of Catch 22. Show starts at 9PM. Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door.

Fans of Electronic music should head to AS220 Saturday night for “A Night of Electronic Fun,” featuring several area bands including Blue Eyed Fools, Daniel Ouellette & the Shobijin, Global Crash and VII. Cover is $6, it’s an all ages event starting at 9PM. Check the website for more details.

Fans of Roots Rock might want to head to The Met tomorrow night for a great line up headlined by The Mallet Brothers. The Portland, Maine rockers are known to put on a kick-ass show and we expect no less tomorrow night. Local stars Torn Shorts and Dylan Sevey open at 9PM, tickets only 10 bucks.
