5 Live Music Musts: March 7, 2014

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day so this week we highlight several local shows featuring lady rockers, female folksters and assorted others. Read on…

Marissa Nadler at Columbus

Start tonight, March 7, at Providence's venerable Columbus Theatre where Boston singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler is in town. The "dream pop" artist, who just released a new album titled July, sings ethereal folk songs. It’s a rare opportunity to see Nadler, who’s received a great deal of critical praise in recent years. The Alex K. Redfearn Trio and local SXSW-bound “ghost folk” diva Allysen Callery open. Doors at 8PM, music at 9PM, tickets $12 at door.

Amy Black at Chans

Another popular Boston based artist with an emerging national presence is Amy Black. She'll be at Chan's tomorrow night playing tunes from her fantastic new album, This is Home. The album, recorded last year in Nashville, is a tribute to the roots music of the South, where Black spent much of her youth. You’ll hear a number of originals and maybe the John Prine classic, “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness.” She take the stage with her full band at 8PM, tickets are $15.

Sweetback Sisters at Common Fence

The Sweetback Sisters, led by Emily Miller and Zara Bode (soul sisters, not birth sisters), play a mix of rockabilly, honky-tonk Americana and originals. With harmonies as sweet as anything coming out of Nashville and a back-up band as tight as nails, you can expect a great night of music. They headline at Common Fence Music, where the show begins tomorrow at 8PM. Tickets at $22 in advance, $25 at the door.

Fiddlin’ at Riverfolk

The Riverfolk at Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland bring another great international themed concert tonight as they welcome French-American performers Chanterelle, made up of musicians Josee Vachon, Donna Hebert, Alan Bradbury and Max Cohen. The fiddle based Franco-American performers are well known in the region – their Cajun influenced sound has been described as infectious. They play at 8PM, tickets are $15.

Folk at Stone Soup

Another in a great line of shows happens tomorrow night at Pawtucket’s Stone Soup Coffeehouse. Singer-Songwriter Peter Mulvey, who is releasing his latest (Kickstarter funded) album Silver Ladder, will be in town. Opening for Mulvey will be Northampton-based Heather Maloney, who is preparing to release a new album, “Woodstock,” featuring a gorgeous version of the Joni Mitchell classic recorded with Darlingside. Show is at 8PM, tickets are $16 in advance, $18 at the door.
