Consuelo's Revenge has a CD Release Party Tonight at Aurora

There’s something a little frightening about all the great music around town this weekend. A couple of spooky shows at some leading Providence clubs top our list of “5 Live Music Musts.”

From out of the swamps of Providence comes Consuelo’s Revenge, a “roots/rock/gypsy folk/hard to categorize” band appearing tonight at Aurora. Join the band for a CD release party premiering Mercy, described as “a collection of ghost stories, blues ballads, folk-rock and soul, with enough good songs on it that everyone will like at least ONE of them.” They lead the bill that includes a few other ghostly acts – Haunt the House, Jay Berndt, and Sara Azriel. Music starts around 9PM, $10 cover at the door.

Gallows Bound at Firehouse 13 Tonight

Thrills and chills (and a mother-rockin’ good time) await those who gather at Firehouse 13 tonight. Emerging from the mountains of Appalachia is the band Gallows Bound, a folk/punk blugrass outfit from Virginia.  Their songs are described as “an aggressive yet melodic collection ranging from fast and punchy tales of rambling and love, to dark and soulful songs birthed from whiskey and regret.” Local favorites Sasquatch, Whisky Kill, and Damnation open the show. Music starts around 9PM, $10 cover.

Smith’s 30th at Columbus Tonight

Jesse Smith’s 30th Birthday Party is tonight at the Columbus Theatre. What’s especially cool about this show is that Smith’s band, Smith and Weeden, will be playing a full set of Warren Zevon material as the Excitable Boys. They’ll be joined by Dylan Sevey and the American Girls (Gentlemen) with a set of Tom Petty and an opening set from Rosewood Casket(Lula Wiles) performing the Songs of Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Rondstadt. Got all that? If not, think Deervana. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door and the music begins at 9PM.

George Winston at Greenwich Odeum Tonight

Pianist George Winston made his mark in the 80’s as a leading purveyor of the “New Age” movement. He’s well known for his albums inspired by the four seasons and his more recent holiday music in the spirit of Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi. Winston recently released a new album, Spring Carousel:  A Cancer Research Benefit CD. Tickets for the Greenwich Odeum show start at $36 and the show begins at 8PM. Late word, this show is officially sold out, although the venue occasionally releases last minute tickets.

Guster at Lupo’s

Guster is a popular alternative rock band from Boston who got their start in a dorm room at Tufts University in 1991. They’ve built a dedicated indie following over the years and return to Lupo’s next Thursday November 5. Check out their recent release Evermotion, for some fresh sounds from Guster. It’s an early show, beginning at 7PM. Tickets available here starting at $26. Boston based Nemes opens.
