College Admissions: The ACT Announces Changes for 2016

In the wake of major change announcements from the Collegeboard regarding the SAT, the ACT has now announced a few tweaks of their own. Although not as sweeping as the SAT changes, in 2016 the ACT will add new scoring and make some modifications to the optional writing section. As of 2012, the ACT surpassed the SAT as the most popular college entrance exam in the U.S. And efforts to align the ACT with the common core and career readiness have allowed deeper alignment between the ACT and school systems across the country as its popularity grows.

The ACT composite scale of 36 will NOT change, however:

1. A score for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) will be added. This will be based on the science reasoning and math sections.
2. A score for language arts will also be provided. This will be based on the English, reading, and writing sections.
3. The writing section will remain optional, but many competitive colleges require it. So, for students electing to complete the writing section, the essay topics will be more advanced and will require test takers to provide multiple perspectives on a topic, instead of just one view.

The ACT has been clear in pointing out that these changes are not significant, and most will be transparent to test takers. An estimated 600,000 students took the ACT this past Saturday, and the ACT is accepted by every 4 year college in the U.S. For more information on the ACT and to see where it is offered in your area, go to www.act.org.
