DON'T MISS: RI Black Heritage Society's Opening the Oyster

Robb Dimmick, a professional actor from Plymouth State University, will be in Providence next Saturday, February 15, to present “Opening the Oyster” – a lecture on George T. Downing & African American Cuisine in Rhode Island.

In the notice for the event, the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society quoted Jessica B. Harris from High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America, explaining the cultural significance of the event:

“In Providence, Rhode Island, Emmanuel ‘Manna’ Bernoon, a free Black, opened the city’s first oyster and ale house in 1736…The state also gives us the story of Charity ‘Duchess’ Quamino…She established a catering business and became known as the best pastry chef in the prosperous [Newport]; her frosted plum cakes were renowned. Bernoon and Quamino are examples of the possibilities of culinary entrepreneurship evidenced by both enslaved and free.”
