GoLocal Interview: Ziggy Marley

Ziggy Marley is a busy man these days. He released a new album in June, had a guest role on CBS’s Hawaii Five-0, and is publishing a cookbook due out in October. The seven time Grammy award winner and his band are also starting a tour that includes a stop at the Alex and Ani City Center in Providence next Friday September 23.

GoLocal spoke to Marley earlier this week in between rehearsals for his upcoming tour. “It’s something new, a very purpose driven show that we’re working on,” explained Marley. He’s known to mix up his song selection in concert, and fans can expect several from the new album as well as a few surprises according to the singer.

Ziggy Marley

Ziggy Marley is of course the eldest son of Rita Marley and legendary reggae artist Bob Marley, one of the most recognized icons in the world. His father made reggae music what it is today, “feel good music with a message in it,” observed Ziggy. It’s remained popular partially because “a lot of the music today doesn’t have that message.”

His career began in the 1980’s with the Melody Makers, a band that included several brothers and sisters. The 1988 release Conscious Party, produced by Talking Heads Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, was his first hit album. The Grammy winning record featured top hits like “Tomorrow People” and “Tumblin’ Down.” He followed with a slew of albums which helped make him the leading voice in Reggae music today.

Marley is influenced by many styles of popular music including jazz. He described Bitches Brew by Miles Davis as a life changing album. “It was a revelation, more free than I had ever heard.”

His powerful new release, simply titled Ziggy Marley, is an album “with a message,” he noted. "It's optimistic, but not overbearing." The selection “Amen” typifies the feel of the album:

“Who will profit without shame, those who profit from human pain. Now let peace be your profit, and let love be your saint.

To keep the monsters’ belly filled, many of my people are killed. There is a thirst that must be quenched, for the hearts of the broken.”

“You can swim in the shallow part of the water or the deep part of the ocean,” said Marley explaining the serious nature of his message.

Music and More

Marley has very been busy lately. In addition to his new album, he made his TV acting debut recently on CBS’s Hawaii Five-0. He said he’s looking forward to returning to the set in Hawaii soon – “that’s the best part,” remarked Marley.

He’s also about to release a cookbook Ziggy Marley and Family Cookbook: Delicious Meals Made With Whole, Organic Ingredients from the Marley Kitchen. The book is “filled with recipes from family and friends, my wife and my mother-in-law. It’s all organic,” explained Marley. The Jamaican flavored collection is due out in October and also includes recipes from renowned chefs Bruce Sherman, Ben Ford, and Leonie McDonald. Previously, he’s released a food line, Marley Organics’ GMO-free flavored coconut oils and roasted hempseeds.

In 2013, he won an Emmy Award for his song “I Love You Too” from the Disney Channel’s animation “3rd and Bird” at the Daytime Emmy Creative Arts Awards. The song was based on a children’s book he wrote, I Love You Too, and he’s also penned a graphic novel Marijuanaman.

Marley continues to be active with his Foundation, U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment) to help underprivileged children go to school. The charity provides educational materials and medical supplies for kids in Jamaica and Ethiopia. Marley mentioned that one dollar of every ticket sale goes to the Foundation.

Tickets to the Providence show on Friday September 23 are general admission with no reserved seating and no re-entry allowed and are available for $32.50 in advance and $42.50 the day of the show.  Tickets can be purchased online here.
