Latino Festival and J.Geils Coming to India Point
Two big events are coming to India Point Park in Providence this weekend beginning Saturday with the J. Geils Band and continuing Sunday with the Festival Latino de Providence.
Sunday afternoon brings the first ever Festival Latino de Providence. The festival will feature tropical, merengue and reggaeton music with headliners from throughout Latin America.
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTThis multi-cultural experience includes Latin cuisine, libations and a waterfront dance floor with Latino artists Sergio Vargas, Fefita La Grande, Jowell Y Randy, Vena, Oro Solido, Prince Dynasty and Jhoni the Voice.
The main headliner is famous Dominican merengue singer, Sergio Vargas, who first obtained fame in Latin America and Europe during the 1980s and early 1990s. Also appearing is Manuela Josefa Cabrera, also know as Fefita la Grande, the most prolific and respected female merengue accordionist in the world.
The music runs from 1-8 on Sunday and tickets are still available starting at $20 in advance and $30 the day of festival. Kids under 12 are free. The event is General Admission – blankets and chairs are permitted, but coolers and large bags are not permitted.
Saturday, it’s the J.Geils Band, playing Providence as part of the “Houseparty” tour. The popular rock band has been together since the late 60’s and the touring act includes singer and guitarist Peter Wolf, bassist Danny Klein (Dr. Funk) and harmonica player Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz.
Geils saw commercial success in the 80’s with songs like "Centerfold," "Freeze Frame" and "Love Stinks." Since then, they’ve toured from time to time and opened for artists including Aerosmith and Bob Seger. Expect a show complete with all their big hits. Ian Hunter and the Rant Band open at 6:30PM. Cassandra Wilson

Pat Martino
Pat Martino is a veteran jazz guitarist who hung out with legends Wes Montgomery and John Coltrane as a teenager in Philadelphia. He brought his Organ Trio to Newport featuring organist Pat Bianchi. Hiromi
Hiromi returned to Newport this year playing the Fort Stage Saturday. A native of Japan, Hiromi came to the United States to study at Berklee College in 1999. Jon Batiste
Jon Batiste is a jazz artist who’s hit the big time. His enthusiastic performance demonstrated why he was chosen to be the band leader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Grace Kelly

Lisa Fischer
Lisa Fischer may be best known as a backup vocalist with the Rolling Stones. But she shines brightest with her own band Grand Baton. Tom Harrell
Legendary flugelhorn/trumpeter Tom Harrell and his quintet played to a full house on the Harbor Stage. He’s played on over 260 recordings during the course of his 40+ year career. Kenny Garrett
Kenny Garrett is one of the leading saxophone players in the world today. He began his career playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and later played with Miles Davis. Irvin Mayfield
Irvin Mayfield and The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra closed the proceedings on Saturday with a lively set of spicy classics.
