Matos to Host Olneyville Square Christmas Tree Lighting Event

Check out the first annual Olneyville Square Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration on Saturday, November 30.
In an effort to highlight local businesses and spread holiday cheer, Providence Councilwoman Sabina Matos will host the first annual Olneyville Square Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration on Saturday, November 30 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Olneyville Square, at the corner of Westminster and Manton Avenue in Providence.Organized by Matos, the event will feature photos with Santa, holiday carolers, crafts for kids, and hot cocoa and cookies.

Spreading Holiday Cheer in Olneyville

The celebration is intended to help bring business to the merchants in Olneyville and spread holiday cheer in the community, according to the Matos.

“The event has a duel purpose of bringing the community together and highlighting the great stores and restaurants in Olneyville Square,” Matos told GoLocal. “Saturday is ‘Small Business Saturday’ and shoppers should checkout the great stores in Olneyville for Christmas shopping.”

“Several children's groups will be making ornaments for the tree using weather resistant material. The Kings Cathedral Choir will be leading the caroling. Santa will be stopping by the event for pictures with the kids,” Matos added.

The event is being sponsored by several local businesses including Birchwood Design Group, Wes' Rib House, and Pannone Lopes Devereaux & West LLC. The Olneyville Collaborative is co-presenting the event, along with Matos.

Volunteers from the Latino Contractors Association will decorate the tree. The tree and decorations for this event were purchased with private donations.

Serving Her Community

Prior to being elected to the Providence City Council in November 2010, Matos served on the Board of Directors of the Olneyville Housing Corporation and as President of the Rhode Island Latino Civic Fund’s Latina Leadership Institute. She was also the President of the Board of Directors of the Education Center for the Arts & Sciences Theater (Teatro ECAS), a local organization promoting Spanish language theater and Latino culture. Most recently, Matos was the Associate Director of New Roots Providence, an initiative of the Providence Plan that offers free training, grants, and technical assistance to community organizations throughout Rhode Island.
