Mayors Fung + Avedisian Compete to Raise Funds For Gaspee Days

It's mayor versus mayor in Rhode Island, and it's all for a good cause--Gaspee Days and a very patriotic stripe.

It begins with a red, white and blue stripe that marks the route of Rhode Island's beloved Gaspee Days Parade. It costs the Gaspee Days committee nearly $5,000 each year to repaint the famous stripe that runs from Narragansett Parkway in Warwick into Broad Street in Cranston, so this year, the committee has come up with an ingenious bit of competitive fundraising. 

The mayors of each of these cities--Mayor Scott Avedisian of Warwick, and Mayor Allan Fung of Cranston--are going head to head in an online fundraising challenge to see which politician can generate the most donations. As of Thursday evening, Mayor Avedision was well ahead of Mayor Fung, having generated $1,250, or 50% of his $2,500 goal. Fung is only at $255--just 10% of his goal.

The mayors kicked off the competition with an actual race--painting a white stripe in a section of the parade route. That contest went to Fung, but he clearly needs the support of proud Cranstonites to catch up to his rival.
