MUSIC: Comic Book Keith Gets Superhuman At One-Eighty

Boy, do I love Newport during the summertime. Yeah, it's soon to be over and you'll be wearing your ugly sweater before you know it, but what better way to celebrate the end of the summer than in The City By The Sea? At One-Eighty nestled on bustling Broadway this past Friday a trifecta of Rhode Island bred music was in store. Dylan Sevey & The Gentlemen, Smith & Weeden and Comic Book Keith lit up the downstairs "On The Rocks" area of the place and it was sure to be nothing but spectacular. Sometimes summer seems like it'll never end, but it always does. When the season nears its finale, you gotta experience the Newport nightlife.

The future of Ocean State rock & roll lead by everyone's favorite photo darling Dylan Sevey and his Gentlemen started things off just right, like goldilocks and porridge. These guys are just tight, ripe full of energy and always ready to bring the party. A few new numbers with "The One You Love", "Lying By The Fire" and "New Mischief" showed how much these kids are progressing at a vibrant rate. They also had a killer cover of Bob Dylan's "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" featuring Smith & Weeden's Ollie Williams joining the fray as well. Dylan Sevey & The Gentlemen will be on a star-studded bill at The Spot next Friday on September 6th. Make sure you go, I promise you won't regret it.

Keeping the rockin' & rollin' alive was Smith & Weeden and they kept the festivities steadily moving with their heartfelt & genuine tunes. A lot of power and vigor encompassed their performance, which is nothing new with these guys. Smith & Weeden unveiled a few new songs that included "Cocaine On Christmas" with Ollie taking the lead on vocals, if that's going to be on the upcoming debut album then I can't wait. That album from Smith & Weeden should be coming out before the end of the year, definitely be on the lookout for it because its going to blow up your speakers.

A band from Newport that always wows me on how diverse they are, Comic Book Keith finished out the night with a groove. Sounds ranging from alternative rock, punk and even a tinge of reggae, imagine if The Clash and Ween had a crazed lovechild and this is what you get. Comic Book Keith have a lot of charisma and energy that will take over your inner being. "Frenzy", "Out Of Control", "Time To Shine", "Bangalong" and "Dirty Weapon" highlighted a grand finale to a perfect evening. Another one of those new bands on the Rhode Island scene that you always hear people talking about. I absolutely suggest you catch Comic Book Keith next time they roll through your neighborhood.
