NEW: Brown University to Host Teach-In and Vigil on Syria

Brown University faculty will take part in a teach-in to discuss the ongoing crisis in Syria. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at 5 p.m. in List Art Center, 64 College St., Room 120. The event can be viewed live at brown.edu/web/livestream/.

The Teach-In

Sponsored by the Middle East Studies Program, the teach-in will include presentations and discussions of the causes, key developments, and consequences of the Syria crisis for the people of Syria and the surrounding the region, and the impact of the situation on the U.S. involvement in the Middle East.

• Beshara Doumani, director of the Middle East Studies Program and professor of history
• Elias Muhanna, professor of comparative literature
• Naoko Shibusawa, associate professor of history
• Mayssun Succarie, Cogut postdoctoral fellow in international humanities and modern Arab culture and society

 

The Vigil

Following the teach-in, a vigil, led by the Office of Chaplains and Religious Life, will take place at 6:45 p.m. on the steps of the Stephen Robert ’62 Campus Center. The vigil will be held “for the people of Syria with the hope of building peace and understanding during this time of grave conflict,” according to University Chaplain Janet Cooper Nelson.
