Rhode Island’s Viola Davis had Summer Street in Central Falls named after her in a private ceremony on Sunday morning. The street, now named “Viola Davis Way,” leads to Central Falls High School, where Davis attended.

“Viola Davis makes us proud every single day in Central Falls. Her path to stardom started right here in the city and I want every single person in our city to know that they, too, can make it as far as Viola has,” said Diossa.

Davis, an Emmy and Tony award-winning actress, grew up in Central Falls and is the first African American woman to win a Primetime Emmy Award for her role in How to Get Away with Murder.

She also received two Tony Awards for her role in the plays Fences and King Hedley II.

She most recently starred in the DC Comics movie Suicide Squad, which hit theaters in August.

Viola Davis and Jim Vincent
“Viola Davis is a national treasure. One of the best actresses in the world and clearly the best actress to come out of Rhode Island. But what impresses me most is her life story and the fact that she has never, ever, forgotten where she came from..Central Falls,” said Jim Vincent, President of the NAACP Providence Branch.

Vincent added, “Her struggles, her tenacity are inspirational to all if us. She is the epitome of what one can become when you believe in yourself and have the full support of your family and friends. Viola Davis is a role model for all children who are poor, black and currently lack opportunity. She makes the unbelievable, believable; the impossible, possible.”

The Ceremony

The ceremony was held inside of Central Falls High School and featured over 60 people  including Diossa, Former Chief Justice Frank Williams, Bishop Stephen Harper, and Viola Davis.

Those in attendance were invited to a private reception in the Central Falls High School library with Davis.
