NEW: Viola Davis Nominated as Entertainer of the Year by NAACP Image Awards

Central Falls native Viola Davis has been nominated as entertainer of the year by the NAACP Image Awards. Davis is being nominated for her lead role in the ABC show "How to Get Away With Murder."

Davis will be competing with producer Shonda Rhimes, music producer Pharrell Williams, actor Michael B. Jordan (Creed) and ballerina Misty Copeland.

The NAACP Image Awards celebrate the accomplishments of people of color in fields such as television, literature, film and music. The awards also honor individuals or groups who help promote social justice.

The awards will be presented in a February 6th ceremony.

Viola Davis

In her career, Davis has won two Tony awards and received her first Oscar nomination in 2009 for her performance in Doubt. In September, Davis became the first African-American actress to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a drama for her role as Annalise Keating on "How to get Away With Murder."

Prior to that, Davis received a second Oscar nomination in 2012 for her performance as Aibileen Clark in The Help.

Viola Davis is currently starring as Amanda Waller in the DC Comics movie Suicide Squad with Will Smith and Jared Leto, who plays the Joker.

The film is set to be released on August 5, 2016.
