RI's #6 School 2012: Chariho Regional High School

With the largest leap in the 2012 rankings, Chariho Regional High School jumped 11 spots to claim the #6 ranking this year. The secret? Scores, scores, and more scores.

On the NECAP front, the rural high school in Wood River Junction posted across the board gains: Reading jumped from 86% at or above proficient to 92%, Math climbed from 45% to 53% at or above proficient, and Writing leapt a record-breaking 28 points, from 41% to 69%. As for average SATs, Chariho students raised their Verbal and Math average scores to 520 in 2012 from 502 and 514 in 2011, and nudged last year's Writing average from 500 up to 502 this year. Even the graduation rate at Chariho went up—from 83.4% to 89.3%. Bold moves all around.

Chariho's district certainly commits to success, with an impressive $15,783 spent per pupil, and the commitment isn't just monetary. It looks like the Chargers are charging forward as part of the district's five-year cycle for curriculum revision which kicked off this school year, taking on every subject from Art to Technology. Keep an eye on this upstart in the Top 10. This may be just the beginning.
