RI's #8 School 2012: Portsmouth High School

Nothing spells success for a high school like S-A-T, and Portsmouth High School's marked improvement in its performance on these measures propelled it up 3 spots to land in the Top 10 for 2012, at #8.

Portsmouth High School is the only Aquidneck Island school to make GoLocal's Top 10 for 2012, having replaced Middletown HS, which ranked #6 in 2011, but fell to #12 this year. This school of just over 1,000 students made its biggest splash onto the Top 10 with its latest SAT performances, most notably raising its average Math score from 530 to 547. In addition, Verbal and Writing averages of 518 in the 2011 ranking went up to 529 and 527, respectively.

On the NECAP side, Portsmouth stayed essentially the same from 2011, but an increase in its graduation rate, from 85.6% to 89.2%, was the finishing touch on its move up the list.

Local pride

The spirit of community permeates the school, and earlier this spring, the Portsmouth High School Band gave a special performance to thank the members of the community for their role in making the purchase of new band uniforms a reality. The band, looking fantastic, performed at the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, DC, in April.
