RI Artist Tony Johnson to Speak on Diversity, Arts, at RIC
Rhode Island College, as part of its Dialogue-on-Diversity Spring Lecture Series will present “Express Yo’self: The Power, Problem, and Potential of the Arts," featuring Tony Johnson of the Rhode Island School of Design. Johnson is director of multicultural affairs at RISD, a visual and performing artist, and arts administrator.
Johnson will explore the role of the arts in supporting the universal pursuit of inquiry, as a mirror of the human condition, and in realizing the hope of democracy and understanding the inter-connectedness of the human experience, as well as address, “How are societal realities and inequities being acknowledged and addressed within arts institutions and the arts community-at-large?”
Arts as a reflection of social issues
“As we anticipate a new era in arts education at RIC with the renovation of the Art Center, this lecture will help us take a look at the importance of the arts as a reflection of contemporary social issues,” said Antoinette Gomes, co-chair of the Dialogue-on-Diversity Committee and director of RIC’s Unity Center.
The lecture is funded and supported by the Office of the President, a College Lectures Committee grant and the Dialogue-on-Diversity Committee.
