The only deaf woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress was in town on Thursday. Marlee Matlin appeared at Bryant University in Smithfield as the keynote speaker for the school’s annual women’s summit. In addition to acting, Matlin was the runner up on NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice (on the same season with Newport native Richard Hatch), and although she didn’t win, in one episode she raised $986,000, the most money ever raised for a charity in a single TV event. Tickets are going on sale on Friday, March 30, and $1 from each ticket will go to charity. No word yet on whether or not Neil Young will make a surprise appearance…
Also, make sure you head out to the Warwick Mall tonight for an American Idol viewing party to support South Kingstown’s own Erica van Pelt. She was in the bottom two last week despite giving a great performance, but managed to win America’s vote and proceed into the final 10. The party is being held in the mall’s Food Court, and the food vendors will stay open throughout the broadcast. The show starts at 8 PM and voting opens at 10 PM, so you should vote for her even if you can’t make the party…
