"Vault" is as Much About RI’s Movie-Makers as the Movie: Carriuolo, Guest MINDSETTER™

When it comes to movies, Rhode Island has got talent.  Back in 2011, GoLocal interviewed Tom DeNucci when he was beginning to be noticed in Hollywood as an actor. Tom still acts, but he also has found success in writing and directing. Perhaps most interesting about Tom is that - as with most born-and-raised Rhode Islanders - he stays rooted in Rhode Island.

Most recently, the 35-year-old Cranston resident filmed the movie “Vault.” As a follow-up to its local premiere in Rhode Island, the national distributor Lionsgate scheduled “Vault” nationally in 16 major cities. The movie - though -  is all Rhody. The feature film is based on the 1970s heist masterminded by Northeast mob boss Raymond Patriarca from federal prison.  Patriarca was home based on Federal Hill, so the film was shot locally in places such as the Superman Building. Tom directed and co-wrote the screenplay with B. Dolan, a Rhode Islander who also wrote the film’s music. The producer, Chad Verdi and his family are Rhode Islanders, and the actors are nationally known but love working in Rhode Island.  For example, the film’s “Buddy Providence,” William Forsythe, whom Tom calls “Uncle Will” was his house guest during the premiere of the film. And the staff is largely drawn from students and alums who, like Tom, graduated from Rhode Island colleges and universities.

Vault - film shot in RI
The current film is not an anomaly. Tom works in Rhode Island as much as possible. He loves LA and spends a couple months a year there, but like any true Rhode Islander, he says "Rhode Island always pulls me home.” His parents, and his highly competitive and successful sister (who is a medical doctor), extended family, and friends are a major part of his life. He adds that his filmmaking style is very much East Coast.

Not just Tom’s home but also his knowledge of film is firmly rooted in Rhode IslandI. Tom has a 2005 BA in Digital Recording Arts from NEIT.  He appreciates that NEIT provided the fundamental skills and hands-on experiences needed to jumpstart his career. His admiration for the faculty is mutual. NEIT early recognized Tom as a young student with special talents.  Department Chair Tom Strolla says that Tom was extremely creative and original. He was eager to learn not only the technical but also the inner-working sides of the field.  The entire department felt Tom would be successful, and they are pleased and proud that he is proving them to be right.

Tom periodically reaches back to NEIT and all the many other film programs in RI. He speaks in classes and hires interns and alums. He sees mutual benefit since he learned many of his skills in hands-on classes at NEIT as well when he was an intern at Verdi Productions, the Rhode Island-based company that produced Vault and some of his earlier films.  Tom recalls doing menial jobs as an intern but watching, listening, learning and making friends in the industry. Tom sees his younger self in students and feels he learns from them.  They keep him attuned to what is "hip and current when it comes to new trends in entertainment, technology and pop culture. They have their finger on the pulse of what’s cool.”

In keeping with Tom’s reaching out to potential new filmmakers, he has been working with an anonymous Rhode Island philanthropist who funded free tickets for film students from several colleges and universities as well as a scholarship competition for film students from NEIT and JWU. Tom plans to get together with those students to discuss “Vault” from his perspective and to hear their thoughts on the film.  Expect to hear more from Tom DeNucci and the young filmmakers that he nurtures so enthusiastically. Move over, Hollywood.  Rhode Island's got talent - and knows how to use it.

Dr. Nancy Carriuolo retired from NEIT in May 2019.  She may be reached at [email protected]
