WaterFire Providence Presents ‘Takes It Outside’ with Emerging Artists at the WaterFire Arts Center

WaterFire Providence spotlights emerging artists in #TakeItOutside programming at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence’s Valley neighborhood, 475 Valley St.

On Saturday, October 24 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm WaterFire will host its fourth ArtMart pop-up market. Rhode Island visitors and community members who live and work in Rhode Island are invited to come and meet artists and buy artwork in support of the creative economy.

Mask wearing and physical distancing is required of everyone – at all times.

ArtMart is a smaller scale market with one-way traffic allowing for proper distancing and more space for all. Free parking is available in the American Locomotive Company parking lots adjacent to the WaterFire Arts Center.

ArtMart, a WaterFire Providence New Flame millennial initiative, provides a unique opportunity for young (under 30), emerging artists that includes discounted or sponsored booth space, promotion through social and traditional media, and artist consulting services from Michael Rose Fine Art.

"We are so excited to introduce New Flame sponsored artists to our new ArtMart events. It's a great way for young artists to get exposure and help turn their craft into a business," said Nicole Nehiley, development assistant at WaterFire Providence.

“Constellations”, an Afrofuturistic mural designed and painted by Providence artist Anjel Newmann will be featured at the entrance of the WaterFire Arts Center, outdoors for all to visit, through November 8. Newmann is an artist, anti-racist organizer, educator, and designer of the multimedia mural that urges us to action while reminding us that the past, present, and future are all in constant conversation.

In Newmann’s poem “Constellations” she writes:

As the city sleeps, constellations of the past
redraw themselves in the night sky
reminding us that, while many ships have set sail,
there are many more that will leave shore in the morning.
Map your destination wisely,
for it is never too late to seek justice.
Set ourselves free of the plantation.

WaterFire Providence is presenting the exhibition of Newmann’s multimedia mural “Constellations” as part of our on-going dialog about history and justice which started with “A Thousand Ships” in 2008, a major art installation at WaterFire exploring RI history in the context of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, continuing through the Rosa Parks House project in 2018, to this year’s “Decameron, Providence” and “Fire Flowers and a Time Machine.” WaterFire’s mission is to create community through the power of art and Newmann’s voice is an eloquent testimony to the importance of both remembering and addressing our past to better build our future.
