Wilbury Theatre Group Announces RI Premiere of Futurity

Josh Short
The Wilbury Theatre Group has announced the Rhode Island premiere of the avant-americana musical Futurity by Cesar Alvarez and The Lisps.

"To call Futurity simply a 'musical' would be an understatement. What César and The Lisps have created is one of the rarest of experiences in the theatre. This is a piece that, not unlike Hamilton, challenges our understanding of what theatre can be. The Wilbury Group is honored to be the first company outside of César's direction to produce this show, and  under the steady hand of Brien and Milly and this brilliant cast and creative team we've assembled I can't wait to share it with audiences,”  said Wilbury Artistic Director Josh Short.

The show will run from December 6 through December 23.

About the Show

Originally commissioned by the Walker Center for the Arts and developed in performances at Boston's American Repertory Theatre and New York's SohoRep, Futurity was hailed as a groundbreaking work in the musical theatre by critics and audiences alike.

Winner of the 2016 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, Futurity is the electrifying story-concert of Julian, a Civil War soldier with dreams for a technical utopia, and Ada Lovelace, a mathematician thousands of miles away.

Together they team up to create a machine to end one of the darkest periods in our history.
