215 Students, 50 Employees, and 33 Acres of Campus: PCD’s Folan on Physical and Social Distancing

Kevin Folan
Kevin Folan, the head of school at Providence Country Day, said that he believes the school’s small size — but large footprint — is an advantage in planning for the school year in the fall, in light of the coronvirus pandemic.

“We know the plan we have right now it’s dynamic — it’s not static,” said Folan. “So right now if the school were to open up tomorrow, we would be fully in person — also recognizing that some students and families do not feel comfortable having their child come back to campus, so we’re making sure we have a hybrid model available so that students are able to attend classes virtually through the comfort of their own home.”

“I think we’re fortunate in many ways that we are just a heck of a lot smaller than most of our peers, so even though we are doing our very best to make sure that we are following all guidelines and protocols, the fact that we have 215 students, 50 employees and 33 acres of campus including 94,000 square feet of indoor space really gives us the flexibility to make sure we can still have our classes but still providing that social and physical distancing to accommodate for safety,” he added.

Folan also talked about classes even potentially taking place outside.

"Right now our tech director Justin King is making sure that we’ve got the wi-fi capability to make sure that even when we’re outside, we still have the tech capability to stay in touch with our students who are off-site," said Folan.

"The number one goal — and it’s always been our number one goal — is to make sure that the health and safety of all our constituents — students, all of our employees, even our parents — that really is our North Star and is guiding all of our decisions," he said.
