Italians’ “Rose-Colored Glasses” About Recent Uptick in Coronavirus Cases: LIVE From Bolzano

Rebecca Couto d Silva
Rebecca Couto da Silva joined GoLocal LIVE from Bolzano, Italy - where she said that the predominant view of the recent surge in coronavirus cases is that people think it’s “under control.”

On August 28, the country reported 1,460 new cases — after having seen cases drop as low as 114 on July 14.

“There’s this sort of sense — it’s funny, because you see these big numbers, and then you see people just with this very ho-hum attitude like yeah, you know, no worries,” said da Silva. “You hear a couple of people saying hey, we’re going to look like France and Germany in a couple of weeks, this is something we should be more serious about.”

“At the current time, there’s just a lot of, I don’t know if it’s rose-colored glasses, or it’s just a rosy world, but there’s just a lot of, OK, schools are going to open and we’re going to keep up our measures and all of this is happening because people are coming back from vacation but we’ve got it under control,” said da Silva. “So you know again, it’s in three weeks we’ll see if it’s true.”

Since the weekend, Italy has seen a downward trend, with 1,365 news cases reported on August 30, and 996 on August 31.
