Italy Shuts Down As Coronavirus Cases Spike: LIVE From Bolzano

Rebecca Couto da Silva
New England native Rebecca Couto da Silva joined LIVE from Bolzano, Italy where she talked about the latest restrictions nationally — and regionally — as coronavirus cases spike in the European country.

In Italy, there were 9,337 positive cases reported on October 19 — which jumped to over 26,829 new cases on October 29.

“Bars and restaurants are closed at 6 PM [now] in most of the country,” said da Silva, who said “museums, all gyms” are part of the closures. “At first they went after the unsupervised contact sports, then all contact sports, now I believe it’s all indoor sports. There are very few things that you can do. ‘Runners have been saved’ was a headline.”

“Cinemas, spas, ski resorts were supposed to be closed — everything’s just kind of shut down,” she said. “They were debating closing things on Sunday but decided not to.  You’ve got a hard curfew in a lot of places from 11 PM to 5 AM. So if you want to be out [in that time] you have to have a compelling reason.”

Living in Balzano, da Silva spoke to how things can differ regionally than nationally. She said where she lives, local officials opted to keep restaurants and bars open later — and keep ski resorts open — but closed retail on the weekend, and grocery store on Sunday.

“So here where I live, we have this expanded ability to eat out and go to a bar — and ski — but on the weekend there’s nothing, and that’s really really tough, because a lot of that type of shopping happens on the weekend,” she said.
