UPDATED: Two Arrested in Newport for Assaulting Student With “Severe Impairments” at Rogers

The Newport Police Department announced on Friday that a juvenile was arrested in connection with an assault involving a student with severe impairments at Rogers High School. Police announced that a second student was arrested on Saturday.

Police said they were made aware on Friday of cell phone videos of an assault that took place in the boys’ locker room at Rogers.

After an investigation, police said they identified the suspect as a 16-year-old Rogers student, and the second student charged is also 16 years old.

The first juvenile, who has not been identified, was arrested and arraigned in Newport Family Court on two counts of assault on persons with severe impairments. Newport police have not disclosed if the second student has been arraigned.

The Newport School Department has announced that the football season has been cancelled.

Newport Police said it “emphasizes that bullying will not be tolerated or condoned in [the] community.”
