Black Church Owner, Johnston Reach Settlement in Federal Lawsuit

The Town of Johnston and Chris Abhulime with the Kings Tabernacle Church have reached a settlement in the federal lawsuit filed by Abhulime, according to lawyers on Friday.

Noel Sterett with Mauck and Baker confirmed the Abhulime and the church will be awarded an occupancy permit, which will enable them to move forward with rehabilitating the historic property for use.

"The grounds [of the suit] were racial discrimination and religious land use law," said Sterett. "We said that we had a civil right to use the property."

The lawsuit had been filed in January 2016,

"For seven months the church has been denied the ability to use the property," said Sterett. "We appreciate the court, the town, and the Mayor all coming together to resolve this matter.  We're delighted with the outcome."

Resolution to Controversy

In November, GoLocal was first to report on a video showing a Johnston town official overheard making a racially charged statement regarding Abhulime's attempts to rehabilitate the historic church in town — and the reverend called the town’s treatment of his efforts racist.
