UPDATED: Racist Hate Letter Sent to Black Johnston Church Owner's Lawyers

An anonymous racist hate letter referencing "ill-mannered, disrespectful niggers" was sent to the lawyers for Reverend Chris Abhulime with the Kings Tabernacle Church.

Abhulime recently filed a federal lawsuit against the Town of Johnston in January alleging racial discrimination in his attempts to open a church there.

"I was very disappointed. It's nerve wracking to deal with this, which is very unnecessary," said Abhulime, who said he learned of the letter from his lawyers on Tuesday. "I don't know who wrote it, there's no identifier, no name or address. Certainly we should not be condoning this as a society."

In November, Abhulime shared a video of a Johnston town official making a racially charged comment regarding his efforts to rehabilitate the church building.

Jim Vincent, President of the the NAACP Providence Branch, said he was given a copy of the letter on Wednesday.

"This was an anonymous letter, I heard from Chris about it," said Vincent. "I told them to forward to the police and the Mayor of Johnston."

Lawyers for Abhulime at Mauck and Bauer in Chicago were not available for immediate comment.

"I'm trying to be cautious here," said Vincent. "There are people who might be trying to be mischievous and make the town look bad.  I don't take at face value that it's racism, but I can't discount that -- I don't want to say that's not the case, it could be."

"So that's why I said send it to the police and the Mayor, so that they're at least aware of it," said Vincent.
