Jan 6 Committee Votes to Refer Trump to Justice Department on Criminal Charges

The January 6 select committee voted on Monday to criminally refer former President Donald Trump for his role in the deadly insurrection — and his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. 

Monday's criminal referral, which would be non-binding and largely symbolic, does not require the Justice Department to take any additional action.

The DOJ ultimately would decide whether the evidence supports prosecution.

In November, Trump announced his 2024 presidential run -- and last week, New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman argued that Trump sees his 2024 presidential campaign as a "shield" against indictment.

 

 

Latest for Committee

The panel has held 10 public hearings, and since October, has interviewed former Secret Service agent Anthony M. Ornato, former top Trump staffers Hope Hicks and Kellyanne Conway and others.

The committee is also planning to release its final report on Wednesday, which will include transcripts of interviews with witnesses and hundreds of thousands of documents and other material evidence.
