Many of the heads of the top New England boarding schools receive annual compensation that is higher than the presidents of colleges and universities that are ten to 50 times their size.

GoLocal researched thousands of pages of federal tax data submitted to the IRS by 99 boarding schools in New England.  

As an example, four of the 99 boarding school heads earned annual compensation in excess of $600,000. In contrast, President David Dooley of University of Rhode Island, who oversees a student population of more than 15,000 undergrad and graduate students earned $320,000 in 2013 -- less than half of these boarding school headmasters in New England.

The boarding schools reviewed are among the most exclusive in the country and have produced some of America’s most powerful and affluent. Phillips Exeter’s alums include Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook; author Dan Brown of  “The Da Vinci Code;" as well as both Ted and Robert Kennedy.

Rhode Island's St. George's School lists famous alumni from poet Ogden Nash to actress Julie Bowen to former Democratic Presidential candidate Howard Dean.
