Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist spoke to what she viewed as the state's most successful outcomes in the past year -- as well as challenges ahead.

"Over the past year, teachers, family members, and communities have rallied around our high-school students and the students themselves have really stepped up to improve their knowledge and skills in mathematics – and the results have been remarkable. As a result of this work, the current graduating class is better prepared for success than any class before in Rhode Island. I’m really pleased that more than 2,000 students who were “substantially below proficient” in their junior year have made significant improvement and met the expectations of our Diploma System. I’m also pleased that, based on student growth and achievement, closing achievement gaps, and graduation rates, we have classified 18 of our high schools as 2014 Commended Schools," said Gist.

"Looking ahead, it is absolutely in the best interest of our students that all of us continue to focus on improving student achievement and to make sure that, every year, our students are even better prepared for success before they earn a diploma and graduate from our high schools."
