Controversy Surrounds Dr. Cretella Lecture at Providence College

Dr. Michelle Cretella
This week, controversy surrounded Providence College when the administration planned a lecture by Dr. Michelle Cretella, a certified pediatrician at the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality. Her association with beliefs that homosexuality can be reformed through therapy has upset some of the school’s faculty and student body.

Dr. Cretella was scheduled to speak on Tuesday, February 18 at 4:00pm at Providence College. However, the event has since been postponed to a later, undetermined date due to the continuing dispute on campus.

In September, Providence College cancelled a lecture titled “The Meaning of (Gay) Marriage” by John Corvino, chairman of Wayne State University’s philosophy department. The faculty and student body protested the administration’s independent decision to cancel the student-planned event. The issue gained national attention from The New York Times, Huffington Post, USA Today, Providence Journal, among others.

Recently, Providence College included homosexual men and women in their non-discrimination policy. Incidentally, students and faculty feel that Dr. Cretella’s views, which advocate for medical reparation of homosexual orientation, are offensive to the school’s LGBT community.

The administration and staff are still discussing the issues surrounding the event before moving forward in its planning.
