Cranston Police Release Names of 2 Killed in Dirt Bike Crash
Cranston Police Chief Michael Winquist. PHOTO: CPDThe Cranston Police Department has released the names of the individuals who died Wednesday night while riding a dirt bike in the city.
The following statement was released on Thursday:
"The Cranston Police responded to a report of a crash involving a motocross racing motorcycle and an SUV at the intersection of Broad Street and Wheeler Avenue at approximately 8:13 pm last night.
The motorcycle was being operated by Jovanni E Delgiudice, age 21, of Providence, RI and the passenger identified as Yasmary Valdera, age 20, of Providence, RI.
Delgiudice and Valdera were transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Cranston Rescue personnel and later succumbed to their injuries. The operator of the SUV was not injured.
The Cranston Police Traffic Reconstruction Unit has prepared the preliminary findings as a result of the crash. Shortly after 8:00pm Delgiudice was operating a black motocross racing motorcycle with Valdera on the back travelling southbound on Broad Street. The motorcycle was a 2023 Yamaha YZ125 and was not equipped with any headlights or emergency equipment.
Neither Delgiudice nor Valdera were wearing helmets or had a motorcycle license. Two eyewitnesses who were also driving northbound stated the motorcycle was at a high rate of speed passing them on left illegally and driving at oncoming traffic. Witnesses also noted that the motorcycle had no lights and visibility of the motorcycle was poor.
As Delgiudice approached the intersection of Wheeler Avenue at a high rate of speed, a 2014 Red Nissan Pathfinder travelling northbound was in the process of turning left (west) onto Wheeler Avenue. Delgiudice then skidded approximately fifty feet and crashed into the front passenger side quarter of the Nissan Pathfinder. Delgiudice and Valdera were thrown from the motorcycle with life threatening injuries.
There is no evidence of any wrongdoing or any charges pending against the operator of the Nissan Pathfinder at this time. The Cranston Police Traffic Reconstruction Unit and the Rhode Island Medical Examiners Office continue to investigate this crash.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Delgiudice and Valdera family during this very difficult time."
