NEW: Ebola Infected Rhode Islander to be Treated in Nebraska

Providence resident Ashoka Mukpo, the fourth American to contract the Ebola virus will be treated in Nebraska, according to Rhode Island Department of Health's Chief Officer of Health Promotion Christina Batastini.  

"Mukpo will not be treated at a Rhode Island hospital. He is being flown to University of Nebraska Medical Center," said Batastini. 

Mukpo, who contracted Ebola while working as a freelance journalist for NBC News in Liberia will be the second American treated at Nebraska Medical Center.  Central Massachusetts Doctor Rick Sacra was released on September 26 after being successfully treated with an infusion of plasma from U.S.. Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly, as well as an undisclosed experimental drug.  Sacra contracted the Ebola virus on August 29th  while delivering babies in the obstetrics unit of SIM’s ELWA hospital in Monrovia, Liberia.

The Nebraska Medical Center, along with Emory University Hospital where the other American Ebola patients have been treated, are among five hospitals in the United States with a special isolation unit.

Nancy Writebol

  • Treated:  Emory University Hospital [Special Isolation Unit]
  • Arrived:  August 4
  • Region Contracted:   Liberia while working for faith-based charity Samaritan’s Purse. 
  • Treatment:   Zmapp:  an experimental serum designed from the antibodies of people who had survived Ebola

Dr. Rick Sacra

  • Treated:  University of Nebraska Medical Center
  • Arrived:  September 9
  • Treatment:   An infusion of plasma from U.S.. Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly, as well as an undisclosed experimental drug
  • Region Contracted:  Liberia.   Sacra contracted Ebola on Aug. 29 while working at a hospital in Liberia on behalf of the North Carolina-based Christian group SIM USA. Sacra had worked in the obstetrics ward at the ELWA Hospital of SIM in Monrovia.
