EDITORIAL: Shooting, Murder, Shooting - Here's What RI’s Top Elected Officials Said
It was another one of those Providence weekends. A near-endless string of shootings. Seven in total, one resulting in death, and a Providence Police officer was beaten as his gun was almost used against him in the attack.
The murder pushed the number killed to 36 in the past 16 months in the city.
After the weekend of carnage, here is a collection of the press releases, Tweets, Facebook posts and statements issued about the violence from top leaders in Rhode Island and Providence:
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza: Zero
Governor Dan McKee: Nothing
Gubernatorial candidate and RI General Treasurer Seth Magaziner: Nada
Gubernatorial candidate and RI Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea: Zip
Gubernatorial candidate Matt Brown: Not a word
Providence Mayoral candidate Brett Smiley: Not this guy
Providence Mayoral candidate Nirva LaFortune: No time
Providence Mayoral candidate Gonzalo Cuervo: Did not get around to it
Next time one of them says they care about violence, inequity, and justice, you might ask them where is their leadership. Where are their specific ideas? Where is their outrage?
Maybe, just maybe next time they can overrule their political consultants and say something.
Anything.
