EDITORIAL: This Photo Says Everything You Need to Know About Providence’s Leadership

Henderson Bridge Exit Ramp PHOTO: GoLocal

There may be no picture that better expresses the failure of the leadership of the City of Providence than this photo.

A photo that tells drivers to drive up to 25 MPH, stop for a crosswalk, and that there is a bump. By the way, this is all at the end of a bridge exit ramp.

Confusing? Inconsistent? Ugly? Yes, please check all three boxes.

First, some of the background.

Drivers drive far too fast on residential streets in Providence. Cars blow through stop signs and rarely adhere to basic traffic laws.

The strategy of Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza has been instead of enforcing traffic laws, to use speed cameras and speed humps as strategies.

Both speed cameras and speed humps have merit and their installations work in certain applications, but the City of Providence has bungled both rollouts and created chaos, frustration, and rightful anger.

Is it better to have police focus on other issues rather than traffic enforcement? Law enforcement is split on the issue.

But one thing is for sure, and that is that this administration seems to find a way to infuriate most everyone due to lack of planning, education, and communication.

The picture says a thousand words and embodies Elorza’s tenure as mayor.

Welcome to Providence - Mayor Jorge Elorza, Mayor.
