EDITORIAL: The Gift of Jeffrey Osborne

Each year, Providence’s Jeffrey Osborne asks his close friends to visit Rhode Island and play some softball and golf. For Osborne, who grew up in the Mount Hope section of Providence — on Olney Street — the goal is to help raise money to support some community organizations.

Well, the difference between Grammy winning artist Osborne and the rest of us is he does everything big. He raises big money, he hosts big events, and his friends are big stars. He is big time selfless.

On Monday night, stars like Magic Johnson, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Smokey Robinson and more than two dozen other sports and entertainment stars came to McCoy Stadium to raise funds for Amos House, Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence, The MET School, Button Hole and St. Mary’s Home for Children.

For all the activities, hundreds of thousands will be raised this weekend. And, best of all for the Jeffrey Osborne efforts is there are no administrative costs for the effort.

Osborne may be just the leader we are all looking for — a man who is unselfish and committed to the community.

To Mr. Osborne, thank you for being a big man, who does big things, and make Rhode Island a better place.
