"Everyone Was Scurrying Around," Says Cotugno in Britt Trial of Mailer Aftermath

Political operative Ed Cotugno
Political operative Ed Cotugno took the stand at State of Rhode Island vs. Jeff Britt trial on Monday, where he testified that he did not know the money contributed by his wife to the Shawna Lawton campaign was for a political mailer.

He did say that after he found out about the mailer, the "s--t hit the fan."

Cotugno's testimony came after failed GOP candidate Lawton was accused of lying by Britt's lawyer, former U.S. Attorney Robert Corrente, on the trial's first day.

In his testimony, Cotugno detailed his work as a political operative, dating back to the 1970s, working for Buddy Cianci, Ed DiPrete and more.

"I got a call from Jeff [Britt] out of the clear blue obviously before the primary. He said he was doing some races for the Speaker and asked me if I’d get involved," said Cotugno of getting involved in the 2016 House District 15 race for Mattiello -- which now has Britt facing felony money laundering and misdemeanor charges of making a prohibited campaign contribution.

Cotugno on Record

Cotugno testified that he often reported to campaign headquarters on Oaklawn Avenue “right next to the Honey Dew donuts” — and spoke to his interaction with Britt, and campaign operative Matt Jerzyk.

"[Jerzyk], he was the manager, in charge of mail — I don’t think he had the title of campaign manager, there was someone else with that title," said Cotugno. "Jeff was basically in charge…I’m sorry, I said Jeff, I meant Matt Jerzyk. I would see him probably daily."

Cotugno spoke to meeting with both Britt and Jerzyk outside campaign headquarters one day, when Britt asked him to make a campaign contribution to Lawton following her defeat -- and then, after Britt and Jerzyk conferred, it was determined it should come from his wife instead.

"Jeff asked me hey would you mind writing a check for Shawna Lawton," said Cotugno, who said Britt didn’t tell him what it was for.

"A few seconds later — he went to talk to Matt and came back and said listen you’re too close to the campaign can you get your wife to write the check, I said I’d ask. She said yeah, whatever," said Cotugno.

"She said what do I put on the check? I said I had no idea, whether it was 'friends of', 'committee to elect' — I said to be in touch with Jeff, he’ll know, so she sent him a text," said Cotugno. "I believe she received a reply, it was for 'friends of Shawna Lawton.'

Cotugno said he was "pretty sure" he hand-delivered it to Britt -- but he "didn't recall"

"My assumption was they are trying to make nice with Shawna Lawton," said Cotugno. "I don’t remember when I was made aware of the mailer — obviously the s--t hit the fan at one point and everybody was scurrying around ‘cause there were letters going out to people from the Board of Elections and people filing complaints. It was all over the news."

"I’m assuming at that time everyone runs for cover," said Cotugno. "I didn't see anything wrong with it in the first place, I don’t see anything wrong with it today."
