Filming to Begin in RI on Movie Starring Barbie's Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson

Filming is slated to begin shortly on Rhode Island’s next big movie, “Ella McCay.” 

In July 2023, GoLocalProv first reported that the film, directed by James Brooks and starring “Barbie” actress Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Woody Harrelson, was slated for production in the state.

Put on hold due to the Hollywood strikes, it is now gearing up — and GoLocal has one of the first locations where it is being shot.

The first-floor commercial space at 445 Broadway in Providence's West End has been transformed into a set for the movie.

Now, it is “Helen’s” — a bar that was “established” in 1972. 

RI Film and Television Office Executive Director Steve Feinberg confirmed the filming location on Tuesday, and said more information will be made public at a press event this week.

"It’s been almost 13 years since James L. Brooks last directed a film and looks like fans of the Oscar-winning writer/director will soon have their wish granted as his next project nears production. Sources tell Deadline that not only as 20th Century come on to Brooks’ next film Ella McCkay but that Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edebiri, Albert Brooks, Kumail Nanjiani and Spike Fearn are in negotiations to star in the pic.

The film will follow an idealistic young politician who juggles familial issues and a challenging work life while preparing to take over the job of her mentor, the state’s longtime incumbent governor."
