Firms Worldwide Want to Design Providence Bridge

Firms from as far away as China and Spain have expressed an interest designing the pedestrian bridge that will replace the old I-195 bridge in Providence.

The bridge will connect residents of the Fox Point and College Hill neighborhoods to the Knowledge District and downtown.

The city’s design competition has received responses from 47 firms. A dozen are local firms while others are based in Spain, France, England, and China. “The fact that the Pedestrian Bridge Design Competition has generated so much interest from a variety of architectural firms bodes well for this project,” said Mayor David Cicilline.

Next, the Pedestrian Bridge Design Committee will select 10 finalists to submit bridge designs by Oct. 29. Those designs will be displayed in city hall the first week of November. The winning design will be announced at the end of the month.

The new bridge is scheduled to open in 2013.
