NEW: First Openly Gay Episcopal Bishop to Speak at URI

Gene Robinson, who served as Bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire from 2003 to 2013.
Gene Robinson, the first openly gay man to be elected to the position of bishop in the Episcopal Church, will speak at the University of Rhode Island Sunday, February 9th from 2 to 4 pm as part of a week-long symposium hosted by University's LGBTQ Center.

Robinson, who resigned his clerical duties last year and now serves as a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, was engulfed in a firestorm of controversy when he was chosen to lead the Diocese of New Hampshire in 2003, which eventually lead a theological schism within the Anglican Church worldwide. Born the child of Kentucky sharecroppers, Robinson can now count international luminaries like President Obama amongst his supporters. The President even wrote the forward to Robinson's latest book, God Believes in Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage, published in 2012.

Robinson is the author of an earlier memoir, Going to Heaven, as well as the subject of a documentary, "Love Free or Die," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. The event will be proceeded by a series of related talks and events continuing through the following week.
