Gist Gets an Additional Year as Education Commissioner

Education commissioner Deborah Gist’s three-year contract with the state was extended by another year by the state Board of Regents yesterday, after it conducted an evaluation of her first year on the job.

The past year has certainly been a momentous one for Gist. She made national headlines when she supported the Central Falls superintendent’s controversial decision to fire all of the teachers at the high school and, most recently, she successfully pushed for a formula for state education funding.

“Overall, the Board of Regents is very pleased and impressed with the Commissioner’s outstanding performance this first year,” said chairman Robert Flanders. “We are grateful for her tireless work to transform education in Rhode Island and admire the leadership she has shown in implementing our shared goals.”
