Danica Iacoi, who serves as General Counsel to the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety, is jumping over to join the staff of Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello’s team as Chief Legal Counsel.

About Iacoi

Iacoi has served for more than six years as the top lawyer for Public Safety, overseeing all legal aspects of the department, from the Rhode Island State Police to the Fire Marshal’s Office.

The move may be perceived as a blow to the Raimondo administration, by losing a top appointment in Iacoi.

In her role as public safety's top attorney, Iacoi “represents the Department in all aspects of labor relations, employment and human resource matters, including grievance and arbitration hearings. [Iacoi] serves on labor negotiation team in connection with collective bargaining agreements and mini-contract negotiations, [and works] closely with the Directors of seven agencies within the Department to provide legal advice and services.”

Iacoi’s appointment jumps her over Matt Jerzyk, who serves as the legal counsel for House Majority Leader Joe Shekarchi.

Latest Move

Iacoi replaces Richard Raspallo, who was named a magistrate in August. He had served as Mattiello’s top attorney at the State House and served as the treasurer of Mattiello’s PAC — the Fund for Democratic Leadership.

Speaker Mattiello
He made $135,169 in the Speaker’s office post, according to State records. He also had his own private practice in Cranston — which was located in the same office building as Mattiello, according to their marketing materials.

Prior to her position as the top lawyer at Public Safety, Iacoi was a staff attorney at Legislative Council at the State House from 2004 to 2011.

She has an undergraduate degree from Providence College, a J.D. from New England School of Law and did graduate work at PC in business.
