MA Voters Reject Expansion of Charter Schools

Massachusetts voters have voted to reject the the expansion of charter schools, according to The Boston Globe. 

During Election Day on Tuesday, November 8, 62% of voters checked off the "no" next to question two, while only 37% of voters checked off "yes."

"Question 2 is most harmful to the students in the traditional public schools for last year, 243 local school districts lost a total of $412 million in taxpayer money to charter schools. Worcester loses $24.5 million annually to charter schools….that is 7.4% of the foundation budget," wrote GoLocalWorcester MINDSETTER™ John Monfredo.

A yes vote to question two would have allowed for the expansion of up to 12 new charter schools per year in Massachusetts. 

Support for Charter Schools

Charter Schools have been pushed for by Great Schools of Massachusetts, a coalition of parents, educators, and community members. 

During the course of the campaign, the group received endorsements from former Presidential nominee Jeb Bush and Congressman Seth Moulton.
