GoLocalTV: Charter Schools Rally at RI State House for Public School Choice

The Rhode Island League of Charter Schools and its 18 member school communities, including teachers, families, students and supporters, rallied on Tuesday in opposition to House Bill 5160 and Senate Bill 87, proposed legislation that they say would halt any future growth of charter public schools in Rhode Island. 

Students, parents, and administrators spoke out on the impact the legislation would have.

Michael Skeldon, Principal of Beacon Charter High School for the Arts, said, "Beacon has only 225 students this year. If local funding of charter schools were to be frozen at the FY 2015 level (based on 2015 enrollment) next year, this could potentially mean that the 51 students accepted to, and scheduled to attend, Founders Academy, would not have funding. There are significant implications to approving an expansion but not funding students to attend
