The Arrest

The arrest stemmed from an investigation that began in August of 2017, when representatives from UNAP/RI contacted the Rhode Island State Police Financial Crimes Unit, saying they suspected Matteson, the former Executive Director of the union’s “Stepping Up” program, had allegedly embezzled funds from the union’s bank accounts.

The investigation showed that Matteson allegedly stole funds totaling $109,000 while serving as the Executive Director of that program from June 2016 through July of 2017.

The Stepping Up program was a co-funded educational trust funded by UNAP/RI, Rhode Island Hospital, and grants.

Union officials told Detectives that the loss of those funds resulted in the eventual collapse of the program.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Rhode Island State Police initially reported that $100K was stolen from the Stepping Up Program. The story has been updated.
