Police say that shortly after 6 PM on Wednesday, March 26, officers were dispatched to Dudley Avenue for a report that a male had been stabbed.

Prior to officers' arrival, it was reported that a possible suspect had fled the area in a Honda CRV with California plates.

Officers said when they arrived on scene, they found a 35-year-old Newport male with multiple stab wounds in his back.

He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is currently in stable condition.

Police say that through their investigation, officers identified the suspect as 39-year-old Hezekiah Mendoza of Providence.

Detectives said they obtained an arrest warrant for Mendoza, and that shortly after 3 AM on Thursday, officers on patrol located Mendoza parked in his vehicle on Wellington Avenue near Kings Park.

Mendoza was taken into custody and transported to the Newport Police Station, and is being charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Specified Felonies and Disorderly Conduct.

He will be arraigned in Newport District Court on Thursday.

Police say this was "an isolated incident and there was no danger to the public" and are urging anyone with information to contact Detective Jack Billings at 401-845-5751 or at [email protected]
