Newport Police Arrest Two Men From New Bedford in Crack Cocaine Bust

Newport Police announced they have arrested two suspects from New Bedford for allegedly possessing illegal narcotics with the intent of distributing.

The suspects reportedly hit parked vehicles when they attempted to flee from police in their vehicle.

One of the parked cars that was hit was occupied at the time, said police.

About Investigation

According to Newport Police, Detectives from the Vice and Narcotics Unit conducted an investigation into the distribution of crack cocaine in the City of Newport. 

During the course of their investigation, police say they identified a suspect as 25-year-old Kolby McCoy of 118 Cove Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts. 

Police say that on March 20, Detectives learned that McCoy would be traveling to the 7-Eleven located at 29 Memorial Boulevard in Newport to distribute crack cocaine.

Detectives said they obtained a search warrant for his vehicle and set up surveillance of the parking lot.  

 

About Operation

At about 12:45 p.m. on March 20, McCoy pulled into the parking lot and two marked Newport Police vehicles, along with Newport Police Detectives, pulled in behind McCoy’s vehicle, according to police. 

Police say that as the uniformed officers approached his vehicle ,McCoy attempted to flee the area and collided with two parked vehicles in the lot and then got his vehicle stuck on a wood pile.

One of the parked vehicles was occupied, but no one was injured, said police. 

McCoy reportedly exited his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody.  

Also in the vehicle was 21-year-old Jacques Jeanty of 67 Austin Street, New Bedford who was taken into custody without incident. 

 

Charges

McCoy was charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver Schedule I/II, Controlled  Substance Conspiracy, Reckless Driving and Obstructing an Officer in the Execution of Duty. 

Jeanty was charged with 2 counts of Possession with Intent to Deliver Schedule I/II and Controlled Substance Conspiracy. 

McCoy and Jeanty were held overnight at the Newport Police Station and are scheduled to be arraigned in Newport District Court on March 22, said police.
