More Questions Arise Over Suspended Providence Dispatcher's Hire

The office of Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza said he didn't meet with or interview the suspended city employee -- but failed to mention he offered her the job himself.
Suspended Providence dispatcher Jenny Roungreuang was not on the original list of three recommended hires to fill the open city positions, GoLocal has learned.

Following her suspension last week, sources say Roungreuang had been tipping off her boyfriend -- convicted felon Keilon Briggs -- with confidential police information.

GoLocal was informed by multiple sources that Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza had direct contact with Roungreuang prior to her hire, and inquired with the Mayor's office on Monday if Elorza had interviewed or met with Roungreuang before she got the job.

"It appears he did not," said Elorza spokesperson Evan England on Monday afternoon.

On Tuesday, the office backtracked on that answer.

"When I inquired yesterday about the Mayor's schedule, I was told that he had met with a group of dispatcher candidates, which she was not part of," said England on Tuesday. "The Mayor did call Roungreuang to offer her the job, which I only found out today."

When asked why he didn't disclose that to GoLocal following the inquiry on Monday, England responded with the following.

"You only asked if he 'met with' or 'interviewed' her," said England.

According to multiple sources, Roungreuang was not on the list of recommended candidates for the position.

"There were three offers made for three separate dispatcher positions. One of the candidates did not accept," said England. "At that point the hiring department put forth Applicant Roungreuang for the remaining open position."
