Musings While on Cloud Nine: Weather, Trivia, Football & More

Is it just my perception or is this “political season” lacking the excitement, zip and intensity of past election years? I get a distinct “ho-hum” vibe from most people I meet. If that’s so, I blame it on the fact that the next campaign begins the minute the election is over. It seems that every politician is in “campaign mode” 24/7/365 and it just flat wears us all out.
Getting straight to trivia
Weather Trivia Quiz #1: What was the name of comedian George Carlin’s “hippie-dippie weatherman”? And what was his forecast for “tonight”?
It’s hard to believe that the most damage and loss of life from a storm so far this hurricane season along the East Coast came from the remnants of a tropical storm (Nicole) that died out six hours after it was “named”.
Usually by this time in my neighborhood there are a couple of trees that have turned to those glorious fall colors, but so far there’s not much going on. Maybe it won’t happen this year … ya think? Fat chance.
Weather Trivia Quiz #2: What was the date of our first measurable snowfall last year and how much did we get?
For my taste there’s no better eating apple grown in Rhode Island (or anywhere for that matter) than a crisp, cold Macoun (pronounced McGowan).
Rhode Island drivers
Did you see where Rhode Island drivers were rated 3rd LEAST DANGEROUS in the nation in a recent “study”? Obviously, whoever did the study never has set foot in the state much less driven on I-95 on a Friday afternoon or been first in line at a red light when it turns green. Yikes! For crying out loud, this is the state where the last-second-three-lane-cut-across-exit-swoop at 70 mph was invented!
Seems to me that given the attendance at the Harvard game, Brown should play more night football and given the massive turnout at the URI/Brown game, it begs for a bigger venue … the total attendance for both events this year was around 25,000 fans … a terrific showing all the way around. And “not for nothin’ “ both games were well played and highly entertaining.
What's coming for winter?
Just because we had such a relatively dry and hot summer does not necessarily mean that we’re in for a cold and snowy winter. Although with the El Nino long gone and La Nina prevailing we probably will see more snow than last year. That’s not saying much since after a snowy December we totaled less than 10” of snow in January, February and March.
October’s not the same around here with the Red Sox not in the playoffs … unless, of course, you’re a Yankee fan. BTW. The way the season played out I’ll bet the Major League schedulers wished they had set up the last weekend to be a Yankees/Rays series rather than a Yankees/Red Sox match up.
Whatever happened to...
Whatever happened to Zayres, Warwick Shoppers World, Nianza and the Outlet Stores? Oh, and Child World too?
You can complain all you want about the Patriot’s defense (400 yards given up Monday night against the Dolphins) but the bottom line is to “Just win, baby. Win.” And so far the Pats have done that in 3 out of 4 games. You get no points for style in the NFL.
Weather Trivia Quiz #1 Answer: The infamous Al Sleet and his forecast for tonight was “Dark”.
Weather Trivia Quiz #2 Answer: December 5 and the official measurement at T. F. Green in Warwick was 1.0”.
Ooooops … gotta go. This edition of Musings is far too long.
