UPDATED: Brown University Professor Charged With Sexual Assault

An assistant professor at Brown University has been arrested on second-degree sexual assault charges, GoLocal has learned. 

According to court documents, Mohammad Ibrahim —an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University and in the Le­gorreta Cancer Center (LCC) at Brown Univer­sity — was arraigned on Friday in Providence District Court. 

"Mohammad Ibrahim turned himself in on Friday. Providence Police had issued a warrant for one count of sexual assault," Providence Police Detectives Major David Lapatin confirmed to GoLocal.

Lapatin said he could not comment on whether or not the alleged assault was on a student. 

Multiple sources tell GoLocal that a student was involved. 

 

Brown University Response

Brown University spokesperson Brian Clark confirmed Friday afternoon that Ibrahim is currently on leave.

"I can confirm that an employee named Mohammad Ibrahim holds the title of assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine (research) and is currently on administrative leave. Beyond confirming employment status and positions held, we’re not otherwise at liberty to speak to matters of personnel involving individual employees," said Clark.

"Dr. Ibrahim completed his Ph.D. in Cancer Biology under Robert W. Sobol, Ph.D. from the Molec­ular and Metabolic Oncology Program at the Mitchell Cancer Institute and the Department of Pharmacology, Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine the University of South Alabama.

Before starting his Ph.D. he was an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Coordinator in the Department of Pharmacy at Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology. He also served as a Lecturer at the Institute of Medical Technology

Dr. Ibrahim’s research will focus on uncovering the role of the DNA base excision repair (BER) pathway in regulating PARP activation and the re­sponse to replication stress. Further, he will focus on targeting BER proteins to overcome PARP and PARG inhibitor resistance in glioblastoma and ovarian cancer.

Dr. Ibrahim likes to play Cricket and Fishing during his leisure period. He is the father of two children."
